Southern Haint Blue Porch Ceilings

If you spend anytime in the Lowcountry, you'll notice most homes have a sky blue porch ceiling.

This tradition began with the Gullah Geechee communities in the coastal parts of South Carolina and Georgia. Ghosts or "haints" were not able to cross water, so in order to repel spirits from plantations, porch ceilings were painted a blue color. This was meant to mimic water to keep any spirits at bay. Often they would paint doors, shutters and window frames this color as well. Today some say that the paint color will prevent wasps from building nests.

What started as a supersition has now translated into a design trend. Below are my favorite shades for completing the perfect southern porch.
